Who is Hecate?
Hecate is the Greek Goddess of Witchcraft and she is associated with the dark arts as well as knowledge in general. She’s frequently depicted as a Triple Goddess bearing a key and some other important symbols.
She’s worshipped in different aspects of Witchcraft today, including Wicca and modern Witchcraft, for example. There are also some witches who identify themselves as Hecatean Witches and Hecate plays a fundamental role in their practices.
She walks the roads on New Moon nights and guides lost souls into the underworld or back from it. Being a Triple Goddess, rituals on the Crescent Moon, Full Moon, and Waning Moon can be done in worship of Hecate, but it is on the New Moon or Black Moon that her power becomes supreme and capable of enormous changes.
Talking about the Moon phases, check my free ebook The Book of Moon Spells.
It is not recommended to perform any ritual during the Black Moon if you’re not absolutely sure of what you are asking for. With the Hecate Ritual you’ll find on this page, you’ll be able to bring changes in your life.
A song for Hecate
I wrote a song for Hecate in 2017. It’s called Hounds of Hekate and it’s under the name of Trismegistia, my New Age musical project. Hounds of Hekate is a tribute to the Goddess in which you, the listener, play the role of a follower.
The song and the music video were successful and I gave an interview for the Pagan Pages Magazine because of it.
The song repeats several times the word “Ελα” in Greek, which means, “come” in English. It’s an invitation from Hecate for you to be guided by her.
In the music video, you follow her through a forest. Suddenly you see her, a key, and her hounds. In the second part of the music video, you ARE one of her hounds, listening to her call and looking for her. When you reach her, you see her dancing and performing a ritual.
What’s this ritual Hecate is performing for?
What’s on this path you’re following now?
Watch Hounds of Hekate and decide by yourself. The music video is available on YouTube and the song is on all music streaming platforms, including Spotify.
Hecate Spell to Banish evil energy
I published this Hecate Spell to banish evil energy spell some years ago. It was originally published on my website in Portuguese and then I also wrote an English version to it. I can’t really remember where I learned this spell or who taught me.
Maybe it was “given to me”.
Anyway, there are thousands of Hecate Spells out there and this one was so well received among the witches online that it was published in the Eclectic Magick Magazine. The editor found my YouTube video teaching this spell and contacted me. It was nice!
If you want to learn how to perform this Hecate Spell, please visit this Hecate Spell tutorial or watch this video on YouTube.
Prayers to Hecate
You can also say a prayer to Hecate for protection. I know many witches and Pagans who prefer a “simple” yet effective prayer to a full complex ritual.
I advise you to recite this prayer to Hecate during the night, preferably alone. If you like burning incense and doing some candle magick, I suggest lighting a white or black candle.
What incense does Hecate like? – you wonder.
Well, according to the Orphic Hymns, Hecate wears a Saffron cloak and Saffron is one of her sacred plants. I personally had never used saffron incense sticks before, but burning saffron as a natural incense is good (and strong! I mean the smell and the powers! So don’t do it in a closed place).
The other incense I recommend to her is one of my all-time favorites: Storax.
Once again, I have never used Storax incense in sticks, but I do love burning the natural resin. I made a video teaching how to use natural incense and burn resins some years ago. Storax is there alongside others.
If you’re new to it, learn how to safely burn natural incense here.
Now back to the Hecate Prayer for Protection, here are two of them:

How to connect with Hecate?
There are several ways you can connect with Hecate. You don’t really need to perform a full ritual to summon Hecate, you can simply connect with her by listening to or reciting her Orphic Hymn for example.
Some years ago we decided to record the Orphic Hymns in English in a way people could listen to them and connect with the Goddess they chose. We started the project and recorded some of them, including the one dedicated to Hecate.
The ones I chose to record were the English ones interpreted by Apostolos N. Athanassakis. I think his versions are those that best match the Greek ones.
You can visit the Orphic Hymn to Hecate page to read it and listen to it or simply go to my YouTube channel to listen to it too.
Asking Hecate for help
If you need guidance, why not ask Hecate for help? Thinking of this I created the Oracle of Hecate. This free online oracle features 17 cards representing different symbols of Hecate. Each one of them brings a message for you to reflect upon as well as some questions.
Give it a try, it’s free! If you enjoy it, consider sharing it and also supporting me by buying me a Ko-fi!
Goddess Hecate Ritual for changes
I’ll teach you now a Goddess Hecate Ritual for changes in your life. Hecate is also considered to be a Goddess of Paths, one who sees in all directions. So, in this ritual, we will work with this aspect of the Goddess. This ritual was selected and it’s part of my free ebook All About Candle Magick. If you prefer a printed version rather than an ebook, you can order one here.
This Hecate Ritual below can be done when you are “lost” in your life. It can also be done when you’re not sure which way to go or what to do.
To invoke Hecate and bring changes in your life, you will need:
- 1 black candle (for change)
- 1 white candle (to clarify doubts)
- 1 yellow candle (to light the way)
- Incense (optional)
- You can also use ritual daggers or keys as a symbol of Hecate to attract and please her.
During a Dark Moon night, around midnight, go somewhere quiet where you can be at peace. Lay out the candles and incense (if using) in a circle. Light the incense and then the white candle.
Think about what you want to ask for Hecate. Take the time you need because you will need total clarity of mind.
Summon Hecate by her name, thanking her for the help you have received.
Now light the black candle and make your wish. Be very precise. Take your time.
Now, light the yellow candle and ask Hecate to light your way, moving away the shadows with the light of her torch, removing the obstacles and turning the problems of the past into new stimuli.
At the end of this Goddess Hecate Ritual, thank her again. The remains of the ritual can be buried or discarded in running water.
Remember that the Goddess Hecate will not show the specific way you want to follow. She will help you to follow the right path and make the right decisions.
Signs of Hecate’s presence
Whether you’re performing a spell to summon Hecate or you’re simply working with her energy, you may wonder what are the signs of Hecate’s presence.
The main signs of Hecate’s presence are the following:
- Some dogs barking in the distance;
- A strange and cold wind passes through your neck;
- You light a candle to Hecate and you get a dancing flame;
- You have some keys and you see them moving by themselves or making some noise;
- Feeling that someone is watching you after calling upon her;
- Having dreams with some of her main symbols such as keys, ropes, torches, or snakes.
OFferings to Hecate
Offerings to Hecate were made at crossroads, which were considered her sacred places. People would gather at these intersections, especially on the night of the new moon, to leave offerings in her name. These offerings typically included:
- Honey;
- Eggs;
- Garlic;
- Fish.
Honey symbolized sweetness and prosperity, while garlic was believed to have protective qualities against evil spirits. Eggs represented fertility and the cycle of life and death, which was under Hecate’s influence. Fish, being creatures of the sea, connected her to her role as a goddess of the waters.
In addition to food offerings, devotees often burned incense, especially a blend of saffron, storax, myrrh, lavender, and mugwort, to invoke Hecate’s presence during rituals. The smoke from the incense was believed to carry prayers and offerings to the goddess. Offerings of wine, particularly red wine, were also common, symbolizing the essence of life and the transformative powers of Hecate.
Furthermore, practitioners of Hecate’s magical arts would offer items like keys, knives, and torches as representations of her dominion over crossroads and her ability to unlock hidden knowledge, cut through illusions, and illuminate the darkness. These offerings were made with reverence, acknowledging Hecate’s role as a guide in both the physical and spiritual realms.
Devotees approached Hecate with respect and awe, recognizing her as a benevolent yet formidable deity. Through these offerings and rituals, they sought her guidance, protection, and blessings, believing that by honoring her, they could gain access to her wisdom and magical abilities, ensuring their safety and success in various endeavors.
Hecate’s influence extended far beyond the offerings made at crossroads, permeating the beliefs and practices of ancient Greek society and leaving an enduring legacy in the world of mythology and magic.
How to summon Hecate – Different ways
As you can see, there are several ways to summon Hecate. If you’re a witch who prefers prayers, you can recite those I showed here. If you prefer the Orphic Hymn, you can connect with Hecate through it.
Now, if you like spellcasting, you can cast the Hecate spell to banish evil energy and purify your home (and your life too!). I also taught a Hecate Ritual to bring changes in your life that may help you when you feel lost and showed you the song I made dedicated to her, Hounds of Hekate.
Not to mention my free Oracle of Hecate where you can ask Hecate for help and draw a card containing one of the main symbols of Hecate and a message for you to think about.
I hope you enjoy working with Hecate as much as I do.
Thank you.
